How to Backtest a cBot on cTrader Before You Buy One

Step-by-step: cTrader Strategy Tester settings, spread modelling, and what backtest stats sellers should show on AlgoScriptX listings.

Buying a cBot because the equity curve screenshot looked smooth is how accounts die quietly. cTrader gives you a proper Strategy Tester — use it before you spend €40 or €400.

Get the file the right way

Legitimate sellers deliver a .algo or compiled cBot you import via Automate. On AlgoScriptX you download after checkout; trials may give you a time-boxed license. Never run a cBot sent as a random ZIP from Telegram.

Strategy Tester settings that matter

Open Automate → select the cBot → Backtesting. Match these to how you actually trade:

  • Symbol — EURUSD is not XAUUSD. Test the pair the seller documents.
  • Timeframe — A scalper on H1 stats will lie on M5.
  • Spread — Fixed minimum spread is optimistic; variable spread hurts grid and scalping bots hardest.
  • Commission — Add what your broker charges. Prop firm rules often differ from retail.
  • Date range — At least 12 months, ideally through a volatile period (2022–2024 had plenty).

Run twice: once on demo spread, once pessimistic. If profit disappears on the second run, you learned something cheap.

Stats worth reading (and one to ignore)

Profit factor above 1.2 over a long sample is a conversation starter, not proof. Max drawdown relative to account size matters more for prop rules. Win rate alone is useless — a 85% win rate with huge losers is still a blow-up bot.

Sellers on AlgoScriptX can publish backtest fields on their listing. Compare those numbers to your own tester run. If they diverge wildly, ask why before you activate a license.
